Alfonso Soriano, Selfishly Wanting To Play Baseball

If it's not one red herring it's another for the anti-Alfonso Soriano fetishists among us. You'll remember that last time the criticism was that he was a "typical Latin lollygagger" who perhaps "shouldn't be playing at all." A shockingly dominating stretch after he returned squelched that nonsense and led to a period of relative quiet - until, that is, he had gall to get hit in the hand with a pitch. So, as he returns again, the critics have recalibrated their distaste for Soriano and now are criticizing him for - egad! - not wanting to take a minor league rehab assignment. The horror! But does he need one? When he returned in May, he produced an admittedly anemic .222/.267/.407 with one home run, five RBI and three runs in his first six games back. Not so strong. So we ask: Is this typical? After missing six games with a bad wheel in April last year (originally thought to be a much longer absence, but he selfishly is a fast healer), his first six games back produced a .345/.367/.552 batting line, with a home run, two RBI and five runs out of the leadoff spot. That was a precursor to a 15-game stretch of .366/.400/.620, with four home runs, seven RBI and 13 runs. Seems he came back ready. After missing much of August 2007, he put up .304/.346/.652 with two home runs, three RBI and five runs. That launched a 25-game streak of .294/.333/.725 with 13 home runs, 23 RBI and 19 runs. Seems he came back ready (again). Next question?
