Brian Roberts: The Trade That Wasn't
Written by wrigleyville
Monday, 07 July 2008
Say the Cubs had paid an ambulance-chaser's ransom for Brian Roberts during the offseason, sending Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, Ronny Cedeno and who knows what else to Baltimore in a rumored 5-for-1 deal for the second baseman. Where would that leave the Cubs today? In a world of hurt, that's where. Consider: Brian Roberts: .295/.373/.493, 7 home runs, 32 RBI, 57 runs. Mark DeRosa: .292/.378/.465, 11 home runs, 49 RBI, 51 runs. So, the Cubs would have gotten marginally to negligibly better. But - and this is a big but - the Cubs would have been harmed in other areas: 1. Starting pitching. Marshall and Gallagher have made 13 combined starts in place of Carlos Zambrano and the disappeared Rich Hill. There are few - if any - others on the farm who could have stepped in, and Jon Leiber certainly isn't an option. 2. Trade bait. Who in the world would be left to trade as the Cubs seek to add an arm or a bat at the deadline? Nobody. Absolutely nobody after sending four or five players to Charm City in exchange for a marginal upgrade. Good non-trade, Mr. Hendry.
