Yankee Stadium Memories, Part Two: Big Stein & Cheeseburgers
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 17 July 2008
Recognizing that there is a dearth of Yankee Stadium coverage these days, I will attempt to fill the void by sharing with you - the public - my personal favorite moments in the Bronx.

My second - and final - favorite Yankee Stadium memory occurred sometime in the summer of 2003.

My boss, a co-worker and I were in New York one afternoon on business when the boss decided we would stay in town for at least part of the Yankees game that night. A telephone call later we had tickets - in George Steinbrenner's box.

We arrived at the Stadium about 6:45 and were taken to Steinbrenner's box, where we immediately see Joe Pepitone. Good times. I could have left right then and been happy.

Inside, there's all manner of memorabilia. Good food. Mike Wallace. You know, stuff you'd expect to find in Steinbrenner's box.

After 10 minutes or so, Steinbrenner pokes his head out of a door and offers to show us his office. More cool stuff in there, but all I could think about was this:

Hey Costanza. What's that your eating over there ? It looks pretty tasty.

George: It's a calzone , sir.

Mr. Steinbrenner: A calzone huh. Pass it down here. Let's have a look at at it. I want a little taste. Come on, come on. Pass it down here. That's a good boy. Okay. What's in this thing?

George: Uh. Cheese, pepperoni , eggplant .

Mr. Steinbrenner: Eggplant. Yes. That's a hell of a thing. Okay let's get back to business. Okay here you go. Very good, very good. Excellent, excellent calzone you got there Costanza. Okay a little jealous now. Okay lets go. Ok last week ....... You know that eggplant was very good. Everybody out. I got eggplant on my mind. Costanza get me couple of those calzones right now. Pronto. Move out. Big Stein wants an eggplant calzone. Must have one. Everybody out. Out.

After five or 10 minutes of chatting, Steinbrenner says, "Hey - you guys get anything to eat? No? You should eat. What do you want? Cheeseburgers?"

"No, thank you, we're OK," we all say.

"So, what? Three cheeseburgers?"

"No, really, it's OK. We can't stay too long. Have to catch a flight."

(To the chef/waiter/whatever in the box) "OK, three cheeseburgers! Quickly! They have to leave!"

(To us) "You're going to love these cheeseburgers. They're the best. Whaddya want? Ketchup? Pickles? Tomato?"

Me: "Um, ketchup, please?"

(To the chef/waiter/whatever): "Three cheeseburgers with ketchup! Make it fast! They're leaving!"

Five minutes later, we're sitting at a table chatting with him about baseball, the commissioner, the Brewers and whatnot and mid-sentence he screams, "Where are the God damn cheeseburgers??!!??" And turned back and finished the sentence.

The cheeseburgers arrived presently. And they were indeed tasty.

True story.
