Alfonso Soriano: Is He Horrible?

With the Cubs in first place and setting all new standards of goodness for the franchise, there are still some worrisome aspects of the team: Starting pitching. Depth at key positions. Center field. For many, however, the biggest threat to the Cubs reaching the promised land appears to be Alfonso Soriano, who some time in the last eight months became a huge pariah among those who view each bat as a matter of life and death. Strike out? Free-swinging Latin. Groundout? Too aggressive. Single? Feh. Home run? That's what you're paid for. I don't remember the hostility last year. So I thought it would be useful to go back and look at Soriano's numbers this year, last year and for his career - and see if there was anything to the apparent madness. Pretty consistent across the board. You can complain about the contract, if you like. But that was a discussion for November 2006. For now, he appears to be the player the Cubs thought he was.
