Big Bat Easier to Find Than You Think
Written by wrigleyville

From time to time, I'll subject myself to torture that is reading Cubs.com "articles." I've read the phrase "Hendry is in search for a big left-handed bat" so many times I'd rather beat myself into submission with it. Now, one could argue that the mess I trot out to this site is barely more palatable that what Muskat sits and types in her basement, but I trudge along.

Back to Hendry and his "big left-handed bat." I've been thinking about what the Cubs should do about the wormhole in CF since Pie's demotion to Iowa. While in the past I've come up with such convolutions as bringing up Matt Murton to play RF and moving Fukudome to CF, that dog just won't hunt.

I turned my nose to the Jim Edmonds signing. He's been passable with the Cubs, hitting .265/.321/.449. However, I guess this experiment won't last too much longer.

It seems as though Hendry is willing to find another OF after Edmonds falls through. Here's my recommendation: he's not the big bopper in the middle of the lineup we'd all hope for, but he's the guy who we could throw atop the order to set the table for the rest. He is Kenny Lofton.

I realize that any dope can go to Baseball Reference and type in a player's name and regurgitate stats. That's how I roll, anyways. But, look at this guy's numbers: for his 17-year career, all he's done is hit .299/.372/.423 with a 107 OPS. He's stolen 622 bases. In his last 5 years in the majors (at the ages of 36-40), Lofton has hit an average of .301/.363 and stole 114 bases (23 bases per season). How great would that look atop this lineup?

The point is, if the Cubs were to make a change (and I've been over and over this in my head countless times) in CF (again), why not rent Kenny Lofton for half a year and ride this thumping offense into October? This leaves Hendry with no problem in CF and more farm system to deal for C. C. Sabathia, A. J. Burnett or any other #2 that's been thrown around on ESPN.com.

This is just a thought, mind you. The Cubs are currently the best team in baseball at 41-24. Not many changes are needed at the moment, beside adding that additional arm. Maybe somebody knows something I don't about Lofton. But, he's a great veteran CF leadoff man just sitting at home in his Spider Man undies waiting for a call.

Once again, even the guy who can't think says something.
