Cubs: Too Much Running?
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 11 June 2008
Through 65 games, the Cubs have piled up the best record in baseball and a slew of impressive offensive statistics:

Batting average - .283 (1st in NL)
On-base percentage - .362 (1st)
Runs - 362 (1st, by 14)
Hits - 645 (1st, by 27)
Walks - 268 (2nd)
Stolen bases - 45 (7th)

The OBP and walks are especially significant changes from the traditionally base-clogging averse Cubs.

But it is the stolen bases that are of some concern. Not the stolen bases, exactly, but the running in general. While the Cubs are seventh in steals, they are an unfortunate fifth in being thrown out stealing (18 times in 63 attempts).

That's a 71 percent success rate - good enough for fourth worst in the National League - ahead of just the Cardinals (70 percent in 43 attempts), Reds (68 percent in 70 attempts), and Nationals (65 percent in a mere 37 attempts).

Which leads to this comment from Davey Lopes in today's Philly Inquirer:

"I preach the same thing," first base coach Davey Lopes said. "If we stole just to steal bases, we'd have a few more. But if you're stealing at a 65 to 70 percent success rate, you'd better stop stealing because you're not doing your team much good."

The Phillies are 43 of 50 so far this year, for 86 percent. Their two primary base stealers, Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino, have both spent time on the disabled list.

The Cubs are just over Davey's 65 to 70 percent range, though not by much. Here is how individual Cubs are faring on the basebaths:

Ryan Theriot, 12 steals in 20 attempts (60 percent)
Alfonso Soriano, 7 for 8 (88 percent)
Kosuke Fukudome, 6 for 8 (75 percent)
Ronny Cedeno, 3 for 4 (75 percent)
Mark DeRosa, 3 for 3 (100 percent)
Derrek Lee, 3 for 5 (60 percent)
Mike Fontenot, 2 for 2 (100 percent)
Felix Pie, 2 for 2 (100 percent)

Hoffpauir, Patterson and Ramirez each have one, with only Ramirez recording a caught stealing (a missed hit and run, if I remember correctly).
