Mike Missanelli, Worried About The Wrong Things
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 25 June 2008
Mike Missanelli of Sports Talk 950 in Philadelphia has said at least three times in the last three weeks that he isn't worried about the Cubs in the playoffs because the Phillies are better than the Cubs. Which, of course, brings up the obvious: 1. As a Cub fan, I do not presume the Cubs will be in the playoffs. As a baseball fan, however, I can see that claim is patently absurd. 2. If the Cubs do make the playoffs, what are the chances the Phillies will be there? They are a mere game ahead of the Marlins, 4 games ahead of the Mets and 4.5 games ahead of the Braves in the East. Have the cart a bit ahead of the horse there, Mike? 3. If they don't win the East, a Wild Card is no guarantee. The Phillies would be in fourth place today if they were in the NL Central - and three games back of the Wild Card-leading Cardinals. Finally, the Phillies don't have a prayer if they follow the advice of Bob Ford in this morning's Philadelphia Inquirer: Whether the Phillies make the playoffs for the second straight season has less to do with the pitching - although it admittedly hasn't been very good - than with the consistency and power production of the offense. That is the way this machine has been built, and that is how it has to run. As the Phils scooted out of town Sunday, heading for the nine-game road trip that began last night in Oakland, Calif., they were dragging a five-game losing streak because the offense was in a slump, not because the pitching had been any worse than usual. So, to recap, the Phillies can throw Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer's grandpa and Amanda Whurlitzer out there and they'll be fine because Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are on the team. Brilliant.
