Time To Ban "A Triple Short Of The Cycle"
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
JD Drew had a big day in Philly today as the Red Sox beat the Phillies. How big? He almost hit for the cycle, as anyone who listened to the radio, read the InterWeb or watched the baseball on TV in the metro area can attest.

Drew tied a career high with four hits and fell a triple short of the cycle, Justin Masterson pitched five effective innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 on Wednesday.

Just a triple short of the cycle?!? So close! Except it's not. That's why we at Wrigleyville23 are starting a campaign to ban the phrase "a triple short of the cycle" from baseball game stories.

(Other examples of this scourge can be found here and here and here.)

This interesting New York Daily News column by Jesse Spector from January breaks down how elusive cycles are. Among the tidbits: Coming into the 2008 season, the Yankees hadn't had a player hit for the cycle since Tony Fernandez did it in 1995. Before that? Bobby Murcer in 1972. Before that, Mickey Mantle in '57. Before that, Joltin' Joe in '48. Before that, Joe Gordon in '40. That's five cycles for the mighty Yankees in nearly 70 years.

More importantly to the point of this post, however, are these facts:

1. There have only been five Yankees who fell a single short of the cycle in the last 33 years (including Lou Piniella in 1978).

2. There have been only five Yankees who fell a double short of the cycle in the last decade.

3. There have been five Yankees who fell a homer short of the cycle in 2006-07 (the column was dealing in fives, as you see).

4. Triples? The Yankees had players fall a triple short of the cycle 13 times in 2007 alone. Thirteen! On the Yankees alone! In 2007! I'm very excited!

So, a "single short of the cycle"? Absolutely. A double short of the cycle? Have at it. A homer short of the cycle? Why not - there are five or six times more home runs in a baseball season than triples.

A "triple short of the cycle"? It doesn't even save you words, compared to "Drew homered, singled and doubled." Be gone, bad phrase.
