WV Dissing Ernie?

No doubt WV posted his all-time favorite Cubs to stir debate, so let's stir up some trouble. Where's Ernie? How can any self-respecting Cubs fan not have Ernie on his top 5. I don't care if you weren't born then. It's just disrespectful. Like not listing Abe Lincoln in your top 5 presidents. Like not listing Old School in your top 5 guys movies. Like not singing "root, root, root for the Cubbies" during Take Me Out to the Ballgame -- no matter what ballpark you're in. I'll give WV the benefit of the doubt that this was a brain fart, a slight lapse in judgment that will be rectified. Because right now, you have ahead of Ernie -- a cheater (though I loved him once too), a crazy man who punches teammates (so I can see the attraction there), and a two-year wonder (some critics would say one-game wonder; though I, too, still like Woody.) That's just not right. So I will put out there my Top 5 favorite Cubs list that is more authentic and includes no one accused of, and in the case of the cork, convicted of, cheating (otherwise, I, too, would include Sammy). 1. Ernie Banks. Where he belongs on all Cubs fans' lists. Doesn't matter if you never saw him play. He's still the heart-and-soul of the Cubs and what it means to be a Cubs fan. 2. Andre Dawson. The Hawk. Signed for nothing to play for the Cubs. Brought us to the playoffs. MVP on a last-place team. Now doing the Just for Men hair dye commercials. Doesn't get cooler than that. Hawk still has his game on. 3. Gary Matthews. The Sarge. The field leader of the greatest/most fun Cubs team of our generation -- the 84 Cubs. Hitting coach who helped take us to the verge of WS in 03. 4. Ryne Sandberg. HOF. Played game right way. Will lead Cubs to a World Series as manager one day. Hero of greatest Cubs game in their history -- 2 homers off Sutter in 84. 5. Jose Cardenal. He was just cool. (In the running: Jody Davis, Burt Hooten, Rick "The Tub" Rueschel (who came back to haunt us in 89)...Fat Man who can pitch; the prelude to David Wells, Aramis Ramirez, Steve Swisher, Kerry Wood if he stays healthy, and Dave Kingman. Nobody got his cuts better at Wrigley than King Kong.)
