A Wrigleyville23 Investigation: Shoddy Japanese Bats
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 06 March 2008
Kosuke Fukudome's bats have been breaking quite a bit this spring. Carrie Muskat says it's because the Japanese tamo wood is drying out in the Arizona desert.

That seems to be too simplistic an explanation, and we don't believe anything Carrie says. So we launched an exclusive Wrigleyville23 investigation. And what we found is shocking and could shake the Japanese bat-making industry to its core.

There is no Wikipedia entry for tamo (coincidence?), but according to our sources at Woodfinder, tamo is "pale brown in color. Darker than European ash. Used for cabinet work and plywood, where toughness is not most important."

Wouldn't "toughness" be an important characteristic for a piece of wood you use to hit a ball traveling at up to 100 mph? We thought so, too. Could it be that Japanese bat-makers are intentionally making flimsy bats in an attempt to drive demand for more ... flimsy bats?

The tamo bat people declined to talk to Wrigleyville23 for this story. An American bat company executive, however, said the U.S. industry has long suspected the Japanese of such practices.

"What can you do?" the executive said. "It's not like this is a regulated industry. Hopefully the media will follow your lead and expose these overseas companies for what they are."
