In a Nutsack: 25-Man Roster Edition
Written by wrigleyville

Since I'm a ball of awesomeness at devising lineups, I'm going to give you my proposed Cubs 25-man roster for Opening Day. I'm going to do this Roberts or Crisp (or any other CF bench player not named here) trades notwithstanding.

In MLB 2K8, I have the virtual Cubs' roster set at 13 hitters and 12 pitchers. Here goes the neighborhood:

Starting Eight:

C, Geovany Soto
1B, Derrek Lee
2B, Mark DeRosa
3B, Aramis Ramirez
SS, Ryan Theriot
LF, Alfonso Soriano
CF, Felix Pie
RF, Kosuke Fukudome

Bench:

1B/OF, Daryle Ward
LF/RF, Matt Murton
C, Henry Blanco
2B/SS, Mike Fontenot
2B/3B/SS, Alex Cintron

Starting Rotation:

1. Carlos Zambrano
2. Ted Lilly
3. Rich Hill
4. Jon Lieber
5. Sean Marshall

Bullpen:

RHP, Kevin Hart
RHP, Mike Wuertz
RHP, Ryan Dempster
RHP, Bob Howry
RHP, Carlos Marmol
LHP, Scott Eyre
CL, Kerry Wood

Now, what I do and what the Cubs do are two entirely different things. You may notice I have no sign of Jason Marquis on my roster. That's because I am holding him hostage to acquire Brian Roberts. I know, I know...trades notwithstanding and whatnot. So, sue me. It's just that Marquis really sucks more than everybody else and in virtual land I can do whatever I want. Like, snuggle with Courteney Cox.

So, you may notice there's only one lefty in the 'pen. That's because Neal Cotts is the other alternative, and I ain't going anywhere near that. The point is, the guys in the bullpen can actually get people out (except for Eyre's lapses). So, if they can get people out, I'm carrying them in the 'pen. As long as Kerry can hold up, he's the closer. But, as badly as I want him to remain in that role all season, his injury history doesn't promise much. So, expect Marmol to take over eventually.

Secondly, I don't know what Sean Marshall has done to deserve the treatment he received at the end of last year, but I think he's a better option that Ryan Dempster. Even though both Dempster and Marquis outpitched him so far this Spring, in the long run I think Marshall is the better pitcher.

Let the Nutsack bashing begin!
