Let's Define "Quarterback Controversy"

Last week, the Chicago Bears signed wide receiver Brandon Lloyd. And according to the Associated Press, Lloyd immediately "stirred a quarterback controversy" by announcing that Rex Grossman was the Bears' starting quarterback. However, the Bears have said publicly that Grossman is going to compete with Kyle Orton for the starting job. I have to take issue with AP calling this a quarterback controversy. It's a discredit to real quarterback controversies. So in the interest of good journalism, we here at Wrigleyville23 are going to lay out some basic parameters so this won't happen again. It is not a quarterback controversy if...
  • no one cares who wins the starting job, including their own teammates.
  • the team involved let their #1 and #2 receivers walk away in the offseason, ensuring that the starting QB will be throwing to Mark Bradley, Brandon Lloyd and Marty Booker.
  • the team involved has made no moves to improve their deteriorating offensive line, thus ensuring that the "winner" will have to be excavated from below the Soldier Field turf by Week 3.
  • the team involved starts Cedric Benson at HB, thus ensuring that opposing defenses won't ever be tempted to guard against the run.
  • the choices are Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.

So reporters should please update their stylebooks and note that whenever any of these conditions apply, it should be known as a quarterback clusterf#^k and not a quarterback controversy.
