The Dustification of Joey Votto
Written by wrigleyville

I think Cubs fans could agree that we'd give our left teste/breasticle to have the Major League-ready talent in the Cincinnati Reds' minor league system. We would also agree that since the Reds' new skipper is Dusty Baker, we'll be more than happy with dumping on their heads from atop the NL Central come July because of the Dustification of the Cincinnati Reds.

Joey Votto, one of the Reds' top prospects, has just been Dustified:

“I really, really hate the called third strike. I hate that. You're guess and you ain't ready to hit.”

Dusty continues...

“He needs to swing some more. I talked to him about that. Strikeouts aren't the only criteria. I'd like to see him more aggressive. A lot of this on-base percentage is taking away the aggressiveness of some young kids. Most of the time you’ve got to put handcuffs on a young [player] to keep him from swinging.”

I guess having a good eye at the plate and feeling out the stiff pitching competition in the Majors (while you're a young player with zero experience) while helping boost the RBI totals of Adam Dunn and Ken Griffy, Jr., which would in turn help your team win ballgames, which they haven't done in a good decade is a bad thing. Just ask the Cubs. Because, walks clog the bases. Dude.

P.S., Votto's approach after last season's callup garnered him this line: .321/.360/.548 in 84 AB's in 24 games. If you extrapolate that over a 162 game season, using the irrefutable laws of math and Newtonian physics (and a little help from a flux capacitor), Votto would be an All-Star with the the same AVG/OBP/SLG, but with 27 HR, 115 RBI, 47 2B and 34 BB in 567 AB.

Mathletes rule.
