As Harry Would Say ... Let's Get Some Runs
Written by wrigleyville

Watching the Cubs score two runs in the seventh inning Thursday to take the lead against the Rockies, I thought "Man, it seems like the Cubs score a lot of runs in seventh innings." Some would just leave it at that. Others would provide useful anecdotal evidence and note the power of the seventh inning stretch. At Wrigleyville23, we're going to provide an in-depth, math-based look at when the Cubs score their runs, thanks to the good people at baseball-reference.com. In 54 games this year ... 1. The Cubs have scored at least one run in the seventh inning 19 times - second only to the 20 times in the eighth inning. The 19 is tied with the second and third innings. 2. The Cubs have scored 39 runs in seventh innings (.722 runs per game) - behind only the 41 runs scored in eighth innings (.759 rpg) and 40 runs scored in third innings (.741 rpg). 3. Of innings one through eight, the Cubs have scored the fewest runs in the sixth (30, for .555 rpg), second (31, .574 rpg) and fifth (33, .611 rpg). I would have thought that the Cubs would have scored more in the sixth inning, as pitchers begin to tire and batters begin to get their third looks at them. Instead, they seem to be picking on bullpens in the seventh and eighth. It seems to work that way for Cubs pitchers, who labor through the middle innings by allowing 33 in the fourth (.611 rpg), 31 in the fifth (.574 rpg) and 36 in the sixth (.667 rpg). No other inning is above 21 runs (the first) for the year. All of this tells us that the Cubs score a lot more runs than the other guys. Which has led to the best record in baseball. That's a good thing.
