Time To Consider Raiding The Pirates Again

The calendar has turned to May and the Cubs are at least temporarily in contention. That can only mean one thing: It is time to figure out which players on the Pittsburgh Pirates will be wearing Cubs uniforms in the next couple of months. The two most attractive position players are Jason Bay and Nate McLouth, though it is highly unlikely the Cubs will be shopping for an outfielder. Moving to the infield, Freddy Sanchez plays second base. The Cubs already have 37 second basemen - plus Eric Patterson waiting in the minors - but Jim Hendry loves second basemen. And Sanchez would cost pennies on the dollar compared to Brian Roberts. With the implosion of Rich Hill - and the fact that Ryan Dempster is bound to come back to earth any minute now and the second half is looming for Jason Marquis - the Cubs definitely could use another arm in the rotation (nothing against the Seans). I find it hard to believe that the Pirates would give up on Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny or Zach Duke so early, but Jim Hendry seems to hold a spell over that franchise. As for who could be available, the Chicago-Pittsburgh Garbage Pact insists that all players headed east must be of little or no value to any other MLB franchise (Hill, Bobby; Izturis, Cesar; Brown, Brant). * *A semi-full accounting of the Chicago-Pittsburgh Garbage Pact can be found here.
