Andy Reid benched Donovan McNabb (perhaps with cause), but in this Phil Sheridan column we learn that Reid didn't bother to do the benching himself: There is no going back after Reid sent quarterback coach Pat Shurmur in to do what he couldn't - look the franchise quarterback in the eye and tell him he was being yanked from a three-point game. So now we know that about Andy Reid. And Sheridan makes a good point that is obvious to anyone who has watched more than 30 minutes of Eagles football: Anyone could see McNabb played poorly in this game. What is debatable is how this very talented, very successful quarterback got to this point. The short answer from here: He has been ground down by a coach who refuses to run the ball, who seldom keeps extra blockers in to protect him the way other elite quarterbacks are protected and who, with one notable exception, has insisted upon stocking his team with the most mediocre receivers available. The post-World Series euphoria didn't carry over to the Eagles.
