Bill Madden Afflicted With Obamamania, Goofiness - But Mostly Goofiness
Written by wrigleyville
Saturday, 08 November 2008
Bill Madden of the New York Daily News makes perhaps the most egregious leap into inanity by a journalist in the afterglow - er, aftermath - of Barack Obama's election: With superfan Barack Obama leading cheers, White Sox now America's team For over 100 years, the Chicago White Sox have had to live as second-class citizens to the Cubs in the Windy City while, nationally, they had a fan base and recognition factor the equivalent of the Houston Astros or San Diego Padres. No more. Not after the extraordinary events of Tuesday night when Barack Obama was elected the first African-American President of the United States. The same Barack Obama who was photographed frequently on the campaign trail and on his morning jogs in Chicago wearing a White Sox cap. The same Barack Obama who has proclaimed himself to be a lifelong White Sox fan and has the pictures to prove it, who has gone as far to say that real baseball in Chicago is played on the South Side. Dare we say it? Can it be? The White Sox America's team? No we can't! This is not change we can believe in. Why on earth would baseball fans abandon their favorite teams simply because Obama has bad taste in baseball teams? Why, exactly, would non-baseball fans suddenly follow the White Sox because Obama apparently enjoys the company of Hawk Harrelson (which - by comparison - makes Bill Ayers and the Rev. Wright significantly less objectionable)? Does Madden think there are so many Cubs fans because Ronald Reagan was a Cubs fan? Because perhaps one of the Roosevelts liked the Yankees? Red Sox fans because of John Kerrey ... um, Michael Dukakis ... oh, never mind.
