Favorite Player, But Never Saw Him Play?
Written by wrigleyville

In a Grand Rapid Press interview, Tim Kurkjian picks a player he never saw play as his favorite of all time: Q: Who is your favorite player of all time? A: "Babe Ruth. My three greatest Detroit Tigers of all time are Ty Cobb No. 1, Charlie Gehringer No. 2 and Al Kaline No. 3, which leaves Hank Greenberg off the list." Kurkjian is 51 years old, so he joined us 21 years after Babe Ruth's final game, 28 years after Cobb and 14 after Gehringer. He was 18 when Kaline retired. Which again raises the question: Can your "favorite player" be someone you never saw play? I say no, as we discussed in this post in June. In baseball, you build a relationship with baseball players - albeit distant and one-sided, like some marriages. I grew up watching Ryne Sandberg play every single day. Sammy Sosa brought me back to baseball after the strike. I can't take my eyes off Z every time he pitches, lest something odd or exciting happen. Woody got me with his loyalty to the Cubs and cursed, cursed luck. With Babe and Cobb, the only video available is grainy and they run really fast in black and white. They always seem to be swinging bats in the on-deck circle, sliding with a smile on their faces or taking an oddly hurried jog after a home run. Sure, the numbers are impressive, but they are little more than ink on a page (or pixels on a monitor) for anyone under 85 or 90. Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb can't be my favorite players any more than sushi can be my favorite food. I've never had it. As an aside, in the previous discussion linked above, Dusty said leaving Ernie Banks off my list of favorite Cubs was like leaving Lincoln off a list of top 5 presidents. He was of course confusing "favorite" with "greatest" - and equating enjoying sports with the management of the republic.
