Of Offseasons Past: Ted Lilly
Written by wrigleyville

As the Cubs ponder trade and free agent possibilities, let's take a moment to look back at one of the much-derided signings from two offseasons ago - Ted Lilly's four-year $40 million contract. Cubs fans complained that he wasn't high-profile free agents Jason Schmidt or Barry Zito (care to rethink that one?). A Brewers blogger called him a "hack" and "average at best." Jayson Stark let an anonymous GM say this: "To me," one GM says, "if you're heading into free agency, you should either go after the absolute elite players or the filler players. The key is, stay out of the Ted Lilly-, Jason Marquis-type contracts, because those are the ones that kill you." So, has Lilly (or Marquis, for that matter) killed the Cubs? Let's see: 2007: 34 starts, 207 innings, 15-8, 3.83, 174 K, 55 BB 2008: 34 starts, 204.2 innings, 17-9, 4.09, 184 K, 64 BB Total: 68 starts, 411.2 innings, 32-17, 3.95, 358 K, 119 BB Zito is a combined 21-30, with an ERA around 4.80, while Schmidt is 12-13 and broken. As for the Brewers blogger criticism, well, it came from the same place that said Jeff Suppan was the second best acquisition of that same offseason (after Alfonso Soriano). Suppan is 22-22 with a 4.75 ERA. We'll took a look at other 2006-07 signings some other time. I know you can't wait.
