Torre Left New York - Can't We Stop Sucking Up?
Written by wrigleyville

Tim Kurkjian was asked by the Grand Rapids Press about Lou Piniella winning the NL manager of the year: Q: Managers of the Year were announced today (Wednesday). One was a no-brainier (Tampa Bay Rays' Joe Maddon), the other (Chicago Cubs' Lou Piniella) was kind of a surprise don't you think? A: "I thought so too. Nothing against Lou Piniella, they had a really good year. I think Freddie Gonzalez of the Florida Marlins was in line for it taking a team that unloaded again and I thought would lose a 100 games, they were still in the playoff race with three weeks to go. Tony La Russa and Joe Torre had better years than Piniella." Strong cases certainly can be made for La Russa, though the Cardinals finished fourth in the Central, and Gonzalez, whose Marlins finished third. But Torre? Based on regular season voting (remember: the ballots are cast before the playoffs)? Consider: 1. Joe managed the Dodgers to an 84-78 record in the West, by far the worst division in the National League. The Cubs finished 97-64 in the Central, the best division in the league. 2. Joe managed the Dodgers to a 54-54 record prior to the trade that brought Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles. That seemed to help him have a "better year," no? 3. To the degree that ESPN has "experts," as they call themselves, the experts at ESPN - including Kurkjian - predicted the Dodgers would win 85 games in 2008. Kurkjian even predicted the Dodgers would win the West. Using this measure, the Dodgers were 1.2 percent worse than ESPN's experts predicted - but still basically right on the money. The Cubs, managed by Lou? Kurkjian picked them to win the Central, and the panel of experts predicted they would win 89 games. With 97 wins, the Cubs overperformed the experts by 9 percent (even with only playing 161 games). So who had the better year? Joe or Lou? According to Kurkjian, it's the guy who managed the Yankees last year, of course.
