WV23 & Kerry Wood: A Brief History
Written by wrigleyville
Friday, 14 November 2008
With the Cubs and Kerry Wood parting ways, it would seem to be an excellent time to look back at some of the dozens of posts on the Cubs closer in Wrigleyville23's two-year history: March 9, 2007 - Kerry says, ''I feel great. I'm having a good time doing this. I have fun waking up not in pain and going out and throwing and not having to get treatments just to go play catch.'' Which, you know, is useful for a pitcher. March 15, 2007 - Kerry is injured. March 18, 2007 - WV23 reports, "Coping with a triceps injury, Kerry Wood is able to throw a baseball - just not a fastball off the mound. Which is akin to a racehorse being able to run - just not fast or on a track. I mean, Kerry is still useful to society and all, but it diminishes his utility in the workplace." March 23, 2007 - Woody's back! And pitches a scoreless inning. March 23, 2007 - Cubs fans start to think maybe Kerry and Prior will be back for 2007. March 26, 2007 - Kerry is injured for the third time in spring training. April 13, 2007 - WV23 notes, "the story linked above is headlined "Wood, Prior head to doctor again." It was just above a story on the sun setting in the west and another on me really, really liking Whoppers." August 3, 2007 - Guess who's back - back again! October 30, 2007 - Carrie Muskat suggests Bob Howry could be the closer in 2008 because he only blew 1/3 of his save opportunities in 2007. November 13, 2007 - WV23 notes, "According to Keith Law, Kerry Wood is the 19th best available free agent - one behind Brad Wilkerson and one ahead of Eric Gagne. That is some lousy company to be in." (He had a far better year than those two.) November 26, 2007 - Phil Rogers reports that Kerry Wood isn't returning to the Cubs. Hours later, Kerry Wood signs a one-year deal to return to the Cubs. Maybe he meant in 2009. March 17, 2008 - WV23 prays, "I cannot begin to say how much I want this to end up being a happy story" on the Kerry Wood closing experiment. March 19, 2008 - Kerry suffers "a minor setback." A nation holds its breath. March 29, 2008 - Not to worry. April 13, 2008 - Kerry asks that Cubs fans be nice to Dusty Baker. April 23, 2008 - Kerry gets the win (and blown save) in the Cubs' 10,000th win. June 14, 2008 - WV23 notes that many people were wrong in saying "Kerry Wood is not a closer," when indeed he is a closer. Damn good one. July 13, 2008 - Kerry to miss the All Star game with a blister. And many games after that. July 24, 2008 - Kerry is still out with a blister. Has anyone called Moises Alou? October 20, 2008 - Jim Hendry hints that Kerry Wood won't be coming back. November 13, 2008 - Jim Hendry announces Kerry Wood won't be coming back.
