Cubs Must Run Faster While Leading League In Runs
Written by wrigleyville
Friday, 31 October 2008
The Cubs may have some problems (or at least as many as a 97-win team can have), but is "slow-footedness" really one of them? Gerry Fraley and his awful haircut think so in an oddly disjointed column: The success of Tampa Bay and Philadelphia could trigger a fundamental shift in the game. Both the Rays and Phillies reached the World Series by incorporating speed into their lineups. With the decline of power throughout baseball since the implementation of testing for performance-enhancing substances, speed increases in value. Slow-footed clubs such as the Tigers, Cubs and the White Sox should take note. The Chicago teams desperately need speed at the top of the order. The Cubs (who have the pokey Alfonso Soriano batting leadoff) were 1st in the National League in OBP, SLG, walks, total bases, RBI and runs. So, the Cubs were getting around the bases - more than any other team. Fraley apparently thinks they weren't getting around fast enough. Beyond that, short of having a league-wide foot race, I guess I'm going to have to look at stolen bases to see if this makes sense. While not a perfect measure, the Cubs were 15th in the major leagues and 8th in the National League in stolen bases - smack dab in the middle in each. The Rays and Phillies were 1st and 4th, respectively, though the Rockies were 2nd. Maybe Fraley's thought is it's best to be 1st or 4th, but not 2nd. I don't know.
