Four Errors? Bah! Let's Blame Zambrano
Written by wrigleyville

Dayn Perry inexplicably lays some blame on Carlos Zambrano for last night's debacle: It was apparent early that Carlos Zambrano was missing his spots, and it didn't take long for the revived Dodger offense to make him pay. A hit-'em-where-they-ain't bounder to a vacated hole at short and Rafael Furcal bunt, two hit-'em-where-they-are miscues by the Cubs, and a capstone Russell Martin three-run double buried the Cubs for, in all likelihood, a 100th straight season. No, no, no. Zambrano is not to blame here. Not even a smidgen. As for your very odd paragraph, I must ask: 1. Early when? Here is what happened in the first three innings: First Rafael Furcal: Ball, Strike looking, Strike looking, Furcal grounded out to pitcher. Russell Martin: Foul, Ball, Martin flied out to right. Manny Ramirez: Foul, Strike looking, Ramirez struck out swinging. Second Andre Ethier: Strike looking, Strike looking, Foul, Ball, Ball, Ethier singled to right. James Loney: Loney singled to left center, Ethier to third. (Actually, Theriot error.) Matt Kemp: Foul, Strike looking, Ball, Ball, Kemp struck out looking. Blake DeWitt: Ball, DeWitt reached on fielder's choice to second, Ethier scored, Loney to second on 2nd baseman DeRosa's fielding error. Casey Blake: Ball, Blake safe at first on 1st baseman Lee's fielding error, Loney to third, DeWitt to second. Chad Billingsley: Strike looking, Strike swinging, Billingsley struck out swinging. Rafael Furcal: Ball, Strike looking, Furcal reached on bunt single to second, Loney scored, DeWitt to third, Blake to second. Russell Martin: Ball, Ball, Strike looking, Ball, Martin doubled to center, DeWitt, Blake and Furcal scored. Manny Ramirez: Foul, Ball, Strike swinging, Ramirez struck out looking. Third Andre Ethier: Ball, Strike looking, Ball, Ethier popped out to second. James Loney: Ball, Ball, Ball, Strike looking, Loney flied out to center. Matt Kemp: Foul, Strike looking, Kemp struck out swinging. So when was he missing his spots? The 10-pitch first inning that included just two balls? Or the second inning that included a single, an error on Ryan Theriot (not called) that should have been a double play, a strikeout, an error by Mark DeRosa, an error by Derrek Lee and another strikeout? That's five outs by Zambrano right there. He was hitting his spots, Dayn. You can't give a team six outs and expect them not to score. Baseball is hard enough. Maybe the 12-pitch third inning? No? We're out of early, Dayn. 2. Hit-'em-where-they-ain't bounder? What? It hit Theriot in his hand - the hand without the glove on it, because Theriot apparently forgot he is righthanded.
