Gene Wojciechowski, American Genius
Written by wrigleyville

Gene Wojciechowski writes a column today headlined "Cubs' latest failure is worse than ever." Really? Worse than being five outs from the World Series only to see it implode over a handful of batters? Worse than being up 0-2 and dominating the Padres, only to lose three in a row in San Diego (including seeing a ball scoot between Leon Durham's legs)? I realize journalism requires hyperbole and a complete lack of historical perspective, but Gene is being a little emotional here, no? It's the same mentality that declares every election "the most important in our nation's history." (Really? More important than 1860? Probably not.) In the midst of this nonsense, Gene says numbers prove the 100-year thing is causing these problems: Cubs manager Lou Piniella can pretend the 100-year World Series drought isn't a factor, but the numbers say otherwise. The Cubs reach October and suddenly need barf bags. Seven walks issued by Ryan Dempster in the Game 1 loss to the Dodgers. Four Cubs errors in the Game 2 loss. Rich Harden's lasting only 4 1/3 innings and the Cubs' leaving nine runners on base in the Game 3 defeat. How do those numbers say draw a direct line to 1908? Does every team that fails in the playoffs feel the burden of their last World Series win? What about those teams that have never won the World Series? Are the White Sox feeling pressure from their failures since 2005? Are the Angels haunted by the ghosts of 2002? If not, what is explaining their failures? What could it possibly be? Some of Piniella's decisions deserve scrutiny, too. He started the struggling Kosuke Fukudome in right field for the first two games and got an 0-for-8 out of him. He slotted Ted Lilly, who had won his last four starts in September, in the No. 4 spot of the playoff rotation. Lilly never threw a pitch. This is the very definition of second guessing. Ryan Dempster at home? Bad idea, apparently. Big Z? No. 4 starter. Rich Harden? Feh. Once again, journalism is essentially people who have no discernible skill criticizing people who are, by and large, very good at what they do. Nice life you've built for yourself, Gene.
