In Defense Of Sammy Sosa
Written by wrigleyville

Once Sammy Sosa fell out of favor with some Cubs fans, it became stylish to diminish his record-breaking accomplishments with the team: They never won with all those homers! He cheated! He never hit home runs when they mattered! A classic in the last category was offered up by a commenter at Another Cubs Blog yesterday: Could we trade Soriano? The Yankees build a team to win in October. The Red Sox build teams to win in October. Soriano is not and has not been an October player. I don’t want Sosa 2.0. I want something better. ... God forbid Soriano play like one of the best home run hitters in history. The horror! There was more: By Sosa 2.0 I mean we have a player who plays great and hits home runs but can’t do it when it counts. How many times do you remember Sosa coming up in the 9th inning and hitting a meaningful home run? I remember him hitting home runs in games where it was 10-1, and games where it was 1-10. But never in a 1-0 or 5-4 game. That wasn’t when Sosa hit his home runs. Soriano can’t get it done in the clutch right now. Well, then. Sammy Sosa hit 609 home runs in his career. Of those, he hit: a. 161 with the game tied. b. 145 with the Cubs up by one run or down by one run. c. 100 with the Cubs up by two or down by two. d. 63 with the Cubs up by three or down by three. e. 140 with the Cubs up by at least four or down by at least four. In other words, Sammy Sosa hit a ton of home runs with the game on the line. How does that compare with other sluggers? Here is a chart of career home run leaders from the last 45 years or so, because of data limitations before 1960. It includes career home runs, go-ahead and game-tying homers, the percentage of home runs that tied the game or gave their team the lead, and walkoff homers. So, what do we have? Sammy is on the low end in this area but in the neighborhood of the best home run hitters in history, especially in the walkoff department (I think those home runs "matter"). This chart is imperfect in that it does not take into account home runs that were hit to bring teams within striking distance or extended leads with runs that later made up the margin of victory. In short, Sammy Sosa hit many, many big home runs in his career. I'm not sure why Cubs fans wouldn't want more of that.
