Is This Really Suffering?

Being a fan of the Cubs or Phillies, that is? Bob Molinaro of the Virginian-Pilot says, "of course not": A lot of people, including media, believe losing under the bright lights to be the worst kind of failure. But a reasonable person would recognize that, simply by being in the hunt, Philadelphia's teams entertain and inspire their fan base. Before the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, we were fed a relentless diet of stories about long-suffering Boston fans, but some of us never swallowed the popular mythology. That's some suffering - generations of New Englanders gratefully pouring their emotions into a perennial contender. The risk of chest pains aside, what fan wouldn't envy the richness of that experience? We were supposed to empathize with Cubs fans to start the postseason. Now what? Pull out the worry beads for Philadelphia? Boo hoo. Phillies fans, long-suffering or not, don't know how good they've got it. Which is a fair point. The Cubs, for example, won 97 games this year and have been to the playoffs six times the last 25 seasons. While that doesn't break any records, it certainly is better than most. Postseason failure or not, there are worse things to watch. Such as this.
