One Reporter's World Series Memories
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 22 October 2008
A Tacoma News-Tribune sportswriter is missing just his second World Series since 1982. He recounts his favorite memories, many of which are very amusing: 1986, Mets-Red Sox: No train rides this time, just a middle seat on an Eastern Airlines shuttle flight from New York to Boston. On my right is Vin Scully, on my left is fellow NBC broadcaster Joe Garagiola. While Scully is friendly but a little detached, Garagiola asks me where I live, what I do, how I see my career in the long term, who I think will win the Series, the names of my childhood pets … 1987, Twins-Cardinals: After he hits a home run, I ask light-hitting Minnesota catcher Tim Laudner where he got his bat. He considers the question for a moment, shrugs his shoulders, and replies: "Louisville." 1993, Blue Jays-Phillies: In the airport terminal, on the morning after Toronto’s Joe Carter ends the Series with a home run off struggling reliever Mitch Williams, a bunch of us are debating Jim Fregosi’s push-button move to summon Williams from the bullpen. Umpire Dave Phillips overhears the discussion, and offers: "All I know is that when the P.A. announcer called Mitch’s name, Lenny Dykstra looked at me and rolled his eyes." 2001, Diamondbacks-Yankees: At the postgame party following Game 7, I hear the unmistakable chant of “Ronnie Woo-Woo,” a staple of the Wrigley Field bleachers. Former Cubs first baseman Mark Grace has invited Ronnie, a bleacher creature whose real name is Ronnie Wickers, to Phoenix, so he can experience a Series victory party in person. Grace is officially insane.
