The Curious Logic Of Patrick McManamon
Written by wrigleyville
Sunday, 19 October 2008
Akron Beacon Journal columnist Patrick McManamon has this to say about CC Sabathia's pending contract: Sabathia is ready to break just about everything when he hits the free-agent market — from the bank to the ceiling on baseball contracts to Sarah Palin's glass ceiling. Sabathia will blow it all to smithereens when he signs his $150 million-something contract. What's left to be seen is whether he also will break the trend regarding rich pitchers. Because most of them do not justify the large contracts they receive. Cases in point? Among the most lucrative contracts in baseball history are those given to Johan Santana ($137.5 million), Barry Zito ($126 million), Mike Hampton ($121 million), Kevin Brown ($105 million) and Carlos Zambrano ($91.5 million). And why is Zambrano not worth it? Zambrano makes $18 million a year and has yet to win his 100th game with the Chicago Cubs. So, is McManamon saying that you aren't worth $18 million a year until you win 100 games? If so, do you get $36 million a year for 200 games? $54 million for 300 games? (Sabathia has won 117 games, so using that math he's worth $21.06 million a year.) Or does he not understand that the Cubs were paying the then-26-year-old Zambrano for his past performance and future potential? Seems like a decent proposition, given his 3.48 lifetime ERA (and not to mention 61 percent lifetime winning percentage, since McManamon insists on talking wins).
