How old? Very old, as every sportswriter across America must reiterate every time he pitches this postseason. Their favorite vehicle is to tell us how old everyone else was when Moyer made his major league debut: (Matt) Garza was 2 1/2 years old when Moyer made his major league debut in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. Rays cleanup hitter Evan Longoria was 8 months old. Why stop at teammates? I mean, I have no real sense how old Evan Longoria or Matt Garza are, off the top of my head. Reading this, I'm guessing pretty young. Let's try this: Johnny Cash was 54 years old when Moyer made his major league debut in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. Mitt Romney was 39 years old, and Myles Brand was 44. Much better. It doesn't add any insight, but it's more amusing. Or, if this InterWeb machine were worth anything, it could remember my birthdate and the Web sites could get the tubes and ball bearings working to personalize the story for me: You were 15 years old when Moyer made his major league debut in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs. You had owned your white 1984 National League East division champs sweatshirt for 21 months. Now that would be helpful.
