Checking In With The Orioles
Written by wrigleyville

They're 64-78. Missing the playoffs (again). Brian Roberts has put together a perfectly fine .295/.376/.459, with nine homers, 53 RBI, 96 runs and 36 SB (10 CS) so far. Compare that to Mark DeRosa's .288/.382/.487, with 20 homers, 83 RBI, 94 runs and six SB (no CS) so far. The Cubs were very wise to not trade the whole minor league system for Roberts, especially when some of those players were used to obtain Rich Harden. To reminisce a little, here are some lectures we got from Baltimore readers in early April on the wonderfulness of Brian Roberts and shrewdness of the Orioles franchise: "The Orioles don't *have* to trade Roberts, so MacPhail can wait until the Cubs pony up what he wants. That's what burns the Cubs fans so much - that the O's aren't jumping at what the Cubs are offering. Roberts will be traded by the end of July, and it will be for a significant package... and by the way, it probably won't be to Chicago. The Orioles will want more back in trade than a bunch of guys that the Cubs value more highly than the rest of baseball does." - patrick, who apparently knows more about baseball than Billy Beane. "The Orioles do not "have" to trade Brian Roberts. In fact MacPhail has never said he "wanted" to trade Brian Roberts. He said that Roberts is a player whose playing ability would bring the O's excellent prospects, the addition of which would help restock our major and minor league rosters. Without attempting to anger someone I don't see the Cubs possessing the quality that I would be looking for. Brian Roberts "is" an all star caliber player. A few "hope they ares" do not get the job done. In my opinion you would have to supply in quantity what you lack in quality, which is why I doubt this gets done. Go O's!" - penzphan, who was polite. But the point remains: DeRosa has been equal if not better.
