Cubs Drafts: Better Than Most?
Written by wrigleyville

It's an article of faith that the Cubs can't develop major league baseball players, at least those who are not pitchers. But is that true? Yes - and no. But mostly yes, though the news is better for the Cubs than some other teams. Buster Olney has a story on the train wreck that is the Yankees farm system, and it includes the number of major league position players and pitchers developed from each team's drafts from 1997 to 2005. The metrics are a bit screwy - focusing on number of players, number of at-bats and number of innings pitched (speaking nothing of the quality of any of the above). With those inherent limitations, here you go (all stats courtesy of Elias): Position Players The Cubs drafted 19 position players between 1997 and 2005 who made major league rosters, which is tied for seventh best with six other teams. The best is the Rockies at 24; the Yankees were the worst at 10. That's the good-ish news. The bad news is those 19 players have had a total of 10,214 at-bats (through Sept. 9), which is only 20th best in the majors. So, even the players who get to the majors aren't sticking around all that long or playing all that much, comparatively. The best: Again, the Rockies with 24,186 at bats. The worst: Again, the Yankees with just 886 at bats, which is barely more than one full season for a single leadoff hitter. Pitchers The track record is much better among pitchers. The Cubs drafted 25 pitchers between 1997-2005 who made major league rosters, behind only the White Sox, Giants, Athletics and Braves in that period. Those pitchers have pitched 6,460 innings, behind only the Athletics and White Sox. The worst - the Dodgers, with 14 pitchers who have thrown a mere 1,867.1 innings.
