Matt Murton and Eric Patterson do a little complaining about the opportunities they got with the Cubs: "After how well I finished last year, and with the things I'd done in the past, I fully expected an opportunity at the major league level this year," Murton said. "When that didn't happen with the acquisition of Kosuke Fukudome, it made it really hard on me mentally." Patterson's situation was similar. After a successful Arizona Fall League stint, Patterson expected a chance to be the Cubs' second baseman in 2007. Instead, Chicago signed free agent Mark DeRosa to a three-year, $13 million deal. "I mean, it's frustrating," Patterson said. "You feel like you're ready to at least get an opportunity to take over, then you see the moves in the offseason and it doesn't really work out that way." The headline of the story is "Change has been good for Murton, Patterson." It took injuries to regulars in Oakland for Murton to get called up, and Patterson has been playing regularly since mid-August. Oh, and for the record: Murton: .100/.129/.133, with seven Ks in 30 at-bats with Oakland. Patterson: .183/.290/.217, with 15 Ks in 60 at-bats with Oakland.
