IAN's Hurricane Gustav Memoires
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 11 September 2008
As you all know by now, I rode out Hurricane Gustav in my home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As it made landfall, Gustav was a Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale of grading tropical weather systems. The Monday, September 1 morning started out well enough. Brisk winds and cloudy skies gave way to "itty bitty stanging rains" and "sideways rains" among 91 mph sustained winds (the highest gusts ever recorded to hit the Baton Rouge area) just after noon on Monday. The lights flickered and the TV box lost and regained power about ten times, then finally at 12:30 all hell broke loose. Trees snapped, shingles flew, power lines fell. For about 8 hours. It was scary not knowing. Was I next? What about my parents' home? How about Mrs. IAN's folks? The power was out from that moment up until late Saturday (September 6) in my neighborhood. We were lucky. Just missing a few shingles. Others in the Baton Rouge area, especially the historic neighborhoods with landmark water oak trees and power poles, were not so fortunate. Many, many, many of those historic water oaks and power poles were littered all over the Baton Rouge area after Gustav plowed through the capital region. Approximately 50% of the city still remains without power, but that is to be expected. To say that my own home has power just after five days in the wake of Gustav is an amazing feat. Please, please, please do not dismiss what Baton Rouge and it's surrounding communities have and are continuing to overcome after this storm. What you all saw in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina doesn't do justice to this storm's wrath. There are many differences in what New Orleans underwent and what Baton Rouge felt. There are so many differences that I can't waste any more of your time with it. However, just know that Gustav was a major blow to Baton Rouge, but with the help of some renewed governmental leadership in Governor Bobby Jindal (Words can't explain the job he has done so far.) and Baton Rouge mayor Kip Holden, Baton Rouge and southeastern Louisiana is already getting back on track. The surrounding bayou and river communities in southeastern Louisiana are already picking up the pieces, rolling up their sleeves and working hard to fix this mess. Thanks for the well wishes. Just know that I'm okay, but there are more less fortunate in the area. Our thoughts should go out to them. I used to downplay hurricanes as a kid. I never knew the value of a dollar back then. Now...I am humbled. You never truly know how good you have it until it's almost or completely taken away. If anyone has any questions about the storm or what it's like to sit through it, feel free. If not, thanks again for your thoughts. Back to baseball. Let's win some games, folks. Side note: I found out that Phillies pitcher Chad Durbin actually has a home in my neighborhood. His wife and child live three houses from mine. Interesting.
