Mr. Melvin Explains Himself
Written by wrigleyville

The Wall Street Journal interviews Doug (or is it Bob?) Melvin about why he fired Ned Yost with two weeks to play and why the Brewers have stunk it up in September (those two things are related, apparently). Here's the best part of the interview: WSJ: How surprising is it that the Brewers have had as much trouble down the stretch in the pennant chase as they have? Mr. Melvin: It was disappointing when we lost the lead. We still look at ourselves at this particular point, you know we've won 85 ball games, right there with the Phillies and the Mets obviously for a playoff chance. We've won more games than anyone in the National League West. We'd be in first place by three or four games. Other things Mr. Melvin claims the Brewers would be leading: the Pacific Coast League, the Scranton Little League West Division and the Boston Marathon. Then Mr. Melvin goes second person on us, much like Dale Sveum did upon being named interim manager: WSJ: How are you dealing with the pressure? Mr. Melvin: You're pacing, there's tension, it's horrible at times during the course of the game. It's never fun until the final out. Ninety-nine percent of a game when you're in a pennant race is not that much fun. It's agonizing, unless you're jumping out and getting big leads. But we have a lot of one-run games. Second person. It's the new third person. You like it. By "you" I mean "I." Finally, Mr. Melvin is asked about the looming specter of the Cubs: WSJ: Do you ever feel frustrated in trying to get your team seen and heard in an area where the Cubs are virtually down the road and hoard a lot of the attention? Mr. Melvin: A lot of it has to do with the access to tickets that people have. It's all over actually. You see the same thing when the Red Sox play in Tampa, or the Yankees play in Tampa. Cub fans are all over. You see it when you go down to Cincinnati. I talked to Walt Jocketty the other day and he said it seemed they had more Cub fans in Cincinnati. If we build a reputation of winning, it's not going to be a problem. Very true.
