Overstating Things A Bit

Tony Jackson of the Pasadena Star-News, a newspaper that once declined to give me an internship, seems to think the national reaction to a Cubs loss will be one of trauma: SAN FRANCISCO - The Dodgers are accustomed to being hated by most of the Bay Area, something they felt the full brunt of as they were losing two of three to longtime rival San Francisco to close out the regular season. Now, they will find out what it is like to be hated by most of America. In the early innings of Sunday's finale, a 3-1 loss to the Giants in front of 39,167 at AT&T Park, the Dodgers learned they will play the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the National League playoffs, beginning at 3:37 p.m. PDT on Wednesday at Wrigley Field. The Cubs, who haven't been to a World Series since 1945 and haven't won one since 1908, enter this postseason as quite possibly the most romanticized team in the history of sports, a universally fawned-over franchise that has taken almost a century of frustration and transformed it into an ingenius marketing tool. As a result, for as long as they last in these playoffs, the Cubs will be the darlings of a nation, and their quaint old ballpark with its ivy-covered brick walls and its faux blue-collar neighborhood will be America's center stage. The Cubs have their fans and may be the choice of casual fans whose teams are out of it. But, judging by traffic here and elsewehre, it seems some people don't like the Cubs all that much. Go figure.
