Apparently, the Cubs have decided to relive history. I give you, the return of one Jon Lieber. Don't shoot the messenger, folks.
Actually, this might not be all bad. Prior signed for $1M guaranteed, but can make upwards of $4.5M in incentives with his deal with San Diego. Lieber's deal is believed to be worth $3.5M for one year. Considering that Lieber was a fan favorite with the Cubs in his glory days, and that he'll actually be around to pitch, this could be a decent signing for the Cubs.
Ken Rosenthal also speculates that this signing could signal a trade of Jason Marquis or Ryan Dempster. Hmmm...or, could it signal an attempt to provide depth in the wake of an impending blockbuster Roberts and Bedard deal, just prior to the Cubs Convention?

it would be awesome if jim hendry could turn back time, however. they could sign greg maddux instead of that load of dreck. they could draft jeter, a-rod, santana.
being the cubs, however, they'd probably even manage to screw that up.
Your optimism is limitless.
Two thoughts:
1) I love when reporters mention trading Jason Marquis. What would we get for him and that contract?
2) I highly doubt that Bedard or Roberts gets traded. It sounds like the asking price is too high, which would indicate that Angelos is still running the show in Baltimore after all. And if Angelos is making the decisions, neither of those guys will be dealt.
Rumors first surfaced about Tejada getting dealt two years ago, and look how long it took before he was sent packing. And that trade was probably only done because they knew the 'roids thing was going to be a big monkey on his back.
Angelos is like an annoying fantasy owner who wants you to give up your entire team before he'll even entertain the notion of trading you his third-best player. I say Roberts and Bedard play in Baltimore this year.
That's a good point about Marquis, but his contract is one that we'd likely take any crap that another team will give us.
On that note, the Mets were believed to be at least mildly interested a month or so back.
About Angelos...you seem to know more than I do on that subject.
Actually, it is $7.5 million if he is healthy.
Let's get Kevin Tapani next!
