April Can Be Cruel To Cub Free Agents
Written by wrigleyville

In light of Milton Bradley's anemic start, Paul Sullivan details some slow starts of Cub free agent signees over the years, as well as the charming response of the fans:

Kosuke Fukudome's hot April last year was the exception to the rule. Alfonso Soriano hit .270 with one homer and 2 RBIs in April of 2007, after signing a $137 million deal in the offeason. He was also booed early on, but wound up hitting .299 with 33 homers and 70 RBIs, helping take the Cubs into the postseason.

Derrek Lee hit .233 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in his first month as a Cub in 2004, leading to chants of "Hee Seop Choi," the popular player the Cubs traded for Lee over the winter. But Lee wound up with 32 homers and 98 RBIs in '04, and has been an integral part of their offense since.

Even much-maligned Jacque Jones, who hit .228 with four homers and 10 RBIs in April of 2006, recovered to finish with a .285 average, with 27 homers and 81 RBIs. Juan Pierre hit .258 in his first month in '06, but escaped the boo birds because of his obvious hustle. Pierre wound up at .292 and led the league in hits.

Perhaps the most famous example of FMCS (First Month Cub Syndrome) was Moises Alou, who hit .133 with one homer and 4 RBIs in April of 2002, after starting off the year with an injury and playing in only nine games. Alou finished with only 15 homers and 61 RBIs in '02, but combined for 61 homers and 197 RBIs in '03 and '04, when he was arguably the most valuable hitter on those two infamous Cubs teams.

Yes, we all miss Hee Seop Choi very much these days.
