Baseball Business: Who Is Willing To Spend?
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 23 April 2009

Forbes has come out with its annual Business of Baseball report, detailing the value, revenues, operating income and other exciting financial features for each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams.

As usual, the Yankees are the most valuable franchise, followed by the Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers and Cubs. Nothing surprising there.

The report also allows us to compare how teams spend their revenue - whether they plow it back into players (Yankees) or sit on piles of cash (Nationals, Marlins).

A full list of teams' 2008 revenues, 2009 Opening Day payrolls, the percentage of revenues dedicated to player salary, and 2008 operating income are detailed in the spreadsheet below. But first, here are a few lists culled from that data:

Top Five Payrolls As Percentage of Revenues

1. Detroit Tigers, 61.9 percent

2. New York Mets, 57.2 percent

3. Chicago Cubs, 56.4 percent

4. New York Yankees, 53.7 percent

5. Los Angeles Angels, 53.6 percent

(Note: The Tigers' large payroll coupled with a $26.3 million loss has to portend a looming firesale, right?)

Bottom Five Payrolls As Percentage of Revenues

1. San Diego Padres, 25.1 percent

2. Florida Marlins, 26.5 percent

3. Washington Nationals, 32.8 percent

4. Pittsburgh Pirates, 33.8 percent

5. Baltimore Orioles, 38.6 percent

Largest Operating Income

1. Florida Marlins, $43.7 million

2. Washington Nationals, $42.6 million

3. Chicago Cubs, $29.7 million

4. Tampa Bay Rays, $29.4 million

5. Baltimore Orioles, $27.2 million

(Operating income is defined as earnings before interest and taxes.)

And now on to the full report (you can view the spread sheet in a separate window here):
