USA Today imagines the Cubs are in a fragile mental state given the last two years of playoffs, not to mention the previous 100 seasons. More importantly, they note the Cubs are vulnerable for another important reason:

Gone, however, is versatile Mark DeRosa, who will be missed on and off the field after his trade to the Cleveland Indians for young pitching and payroll maneuverability. He hit .285 with 21 home runs and 87 RBI as the regular second baseman and No. 1 backup at third, left and right fields (combined 63 starts). "What he meant to the team is more than just numbers," Theriot says.

Beyond the fact that quote whore Ryan Theriot will say anything to fit what reporters are trying to write, let us begin to count the ways Mark DeRosa will be missed "on and off the field" and "more than just numbers":

1. His willingness to talk nicely to Paul Sullivan, which helps Paul Sullivan feel better about Paul Sullivan.

2. Letters, in addition to numbers.

3. Late afternoon cribbage games in the clubhouse.

4. His mom was in charge of bringing orange slices for the seventh inning stretch snack, which were vital to the repeated late inning comebacks.

So, as you see, Mark DeRosa will be missed "on and off the field" and his value came from "more than just numbers."
