Phil Rogers Is Looking Into The Future

Phil Rogers - who is wrong about everything - is at his best today in his "Whispers" column, in which he makes all sorts of assumptions and projections based on two weeks of baseball. To wit:

Rudy Jaramillo has done it again. The Rangers' hitting coach has helped a struggling hitter get on track, this time Andruw Jones. He's killing the ball, justifying the patience shown him in spring training. Texas will look to trade him if it isn't in the AL West race, and he has interested White Sox general manager Ken Williams in the past. 

What have I been missing with Andruw Jones? A .545/.688/1.091 line! Wow, Phil is on to something. Other than the fact that Jones has done that in 11 at-bats.

Moving on:

Strikeouts are becoming a big problem for the Indians. They have had more than 1,200 in each of the last three years and are on pace to pass that total by a lot.

At least he provides some perspective here in discussing what the Indians have done the last three years. Though he falls down on the job by not letting us know how that compares to the rest of the American League. In 2008, they were third in the AL in Ks with 1,213 (behind Oakland and Tampa).; in 2007, they were third with 1,202 (behind Tampa and Texas); and in 2006, they were first with 1,204.

This year, they have 111 - 11 more than second place Tampa.

Moving on:

Both Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa are off to bad starts in San Francisco, quieting talk the Giants will compete with the Dodgers.
