Racism At Wrigley, Part II
Written by wrigleyville

Picking up where we left off on the Gordon Wittenmyer story on allegations of racist behavior by some fans at Wrigley Field, Bruce Levine weighs in with an upset franchise:

Cubs management is incensed over a cover story in Wednesday's Chicago Sun-Times alluding to Wrigley Field being a hotbed for racist comments toward African-American players.

The story centered around the possibility of Milton Bradley, who's had a history of over-reacting to certain situations on the field, potentially reacting to taunts from Wrigley fans.

One management source told me that newspaper officials were contacted by the team, complaining that this type of article without an incident attached to it is negative for the sake of being negative, and it could provoke responses to a problem that doesn't currently exist.

My sources told me before Bradley was signed that he was challenged about the issue during conversations with the team. Bradley told me in spring training that fan taunts are a part of the game and he could deal with any comments aimed at him from the stands.

Cubs management has gone to great lengths to protect its players, including censoring and ejecting some fans from the left-field stands last year when they became abusive toward Alfonso Soriano.

A couple of things:

1. Wittenmyer didn't give the Cubs a chance to comment as a franchise in his story, though he did talk to Bradley and Derrek Lee. That was a mistake for a story in which he is making such serious allegations, and it opens the door wide for them to go to the newspaper to complain.

2. That said, why would the Cubs have to "challenge" Bradley before he was signed about the possibility of such problems at Wrigley - if they weren't aware they had a knucklehead fan problem on their hands?

It's not clear from Levine's post whether it's fan abuse in general or racial-tinged abuse they talked to him about.

Either way, keep it up fans. You're making it harder for the Cubs to be a good team.
