Rod Blagojevich, The Source Of Cub Success
Written by wrigleyville

The Chicago Tribune reports today that on May 31, 2007, Rod Blagojevich sent along a Chicago Sun-Times cartoon to Cubs manager Lou Piniella, reading "That, son, is Lou Piniella - the Rod Blagojevich of Major League Baseball."

Blagojevich added in a handwritten note: "Dear Lou - I saw this in this morning's Sun-Times. What a great compliment for me. Sincerely, Rod Blagojevich."

Harmless enough, along with a very helpful P.S.: "P.S. Have you ever thought about hitting Soriano third, Lee fourth and Ramirez fifth?"

If you all remember, things weren't going so well for the Chicago Cubs in late May 2007. Let's take a look back:

May 30, 2007: Cubs lose 9-0 to the Florida Marlins to fall to 22-29. Third place. Six games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.

May 31, 2007: The Blagojevich letter arrives as Sarge notes losing is a disease.

June 1, 2007: The great Zambrano-Barrett incident. Cubs fall to 22-30. Still third place. 7.5 games back. Sarge declares it the worst of times.

June 2, 2007: The greatest Lou blowup in his Cubs years. Cubs fall to 22-31. Still third place. Still 7.5 games back.

Since June 2, 2007, the Cubs have won 59 percent of their games (165-114), which leads to the question: Did the Blagojevich anger the Cubs so that Carlos Zambrano punched Michael Barrett? Which then angered so that Lou went nuts? Which then spurred the Cubs on to a historically good run?

Whatever the truth is we know that Lou didn't think much of the advice: "I've talked to him, baseball-wise," Piniella said. "He's a big Cubs fan. Obviously we didn't heed his advice."

But he would like to hear more: "The ex-governor is a big Cubs fan. And we always welcome suggestions."
