Sadly, Carpenter Didn't Stand A Chance

chris-carpenter.jpgAfter missing most of the last two seasons, Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter left his start against the Diamondbacks Tuesday night with a rib cage strain.

While that may not sound too serious, we all know Carpenter never had any hope of surviving the season unscathed. You see, Trib baseball writer Phil Rogers - who is wrong about everything - spent the entire spring telling us how healthy the former Cardinals ace is and how he will all but singlehandedly make the team competitive with the Cubs.

Rogers, of course, is the same person who said the Cubs would regret not re-signing Mark Prior. Among other foibles.

Here is a recap of Rogers' obsession with the health of Carpenter:

March 22: Rogers kicked off his jinx-a-thon by writing that "Carpenter has been as impressive as any pitcher in Florida."

April 2: Rogers predicts the Cardinals will be the Cubs' closest competitors, "with Chris Carpenter healthy again."

April 6: Rogers backs off the absolute health claim and says the Cardinals are the eight best team in baseball, "if Chris Carpenter is really back."

April 6: That same day, however, Rogers removed any doubt about his health by writing the Cardinals are deep "with ace Chris Carpenter healthy after two lost seasons and 26-year-old Jason Motte looking tough enough to close for Tony La Russa." The Rogers jinx struck Motte in week one.

April 7: Rogers calls the Cardinals a contender "with ace Chris Carpenter healthy."

April 13: The latest was posted just last night, as Rogers said Carpenter is just one piece of a very solid rotation while naming the Cardinals the second best team in baseball - just three spots ahead of two ballparks (Wrigley and Fenway).
