The Trib backup beat writer goes through the list of "things we know" about the Chicago Cubs, including:

Kosuke Fukudome ... has become a good center fielder and a very, very good No. 2 hitter.

I hope he's right, but I'll take that bet. He also leaves out that Fukudome has become a TOOTBLAN machine.

Van Dyck also knows this:

Derrek Lee ... is proving the many critics wrong. Maybe. While he is hitting just .217, he has been energetic and driving the ball deep into the outfield in five games at Wrigley Field, and the results are a .381 average, two doubles and five RBIs. That should hold the doubters, those who wonder if he has grown old, at bay for a while.

Yes, a .217 average is plenty to "hold the doubters ... at bay." Here is how he sums it all up:

What else ... appears obvious so far? Alfonso Soriano is a streak hitter and is in a hot one right now; Aramis Ramirez is the Cubs' version of Old Faithful; Ryan Theriot is for real; Geovany Soto is still in spring training; Micah Hoffpaiur is better and more versatile than Daryle Ward or Cliff Floyd; and Carlos Zambrano is still Carlos Zambrano.

Note the sneering "right now" about a player who has done more to propel the Cubs to a first-place start than the "very, very good No. 2 hitter" or the man who is "proving the many critics wrong."
