ESPN's Top 100 Players: Where's Fonsie?

It's list-making season, and Rob Neyer of ESPN is doing his part. Today, he lists the top 100 players of the decade, including Carlos Zambrano (No 44), Derrek Lee (58), Sammy Sosa (65), Greg Maddux (73), Aramis Ramirez (76), Nomar Garciaparra (82) and Cliff Floyd (83). That seems to cover the Cubs, which leads to a question: Where is the Cubs' $136 million man? Notably, Alfonso Soriano is not on this list. Odd for a player who hit 290 home runs, stole 257 bases and drove in 760 runs, largely from the leadoff spot. Let's compare his numbers in the '00s with those of, say, Randy Winn (No. 80) or Vernon Wells (No. 86), both of whom played a comparable number of games over a comparable portion of the decade: Soriano: .279 BA, .326 OBP, .510 SLG, .836 OPS, 113 OPS+, 289 HR, 759 RBI, 257 SB. Winn: .287 BA, .347 OBP, .424 SLG, .771 OPS, 102 OPS+, 103 HR, 596 RBI, 174 SB. Wells: .281 BA, .330 OBP, .472 SLG, .802 OPS, 107 OPS+, 191 HR, 717 RBI, 83 SB. Not to mention one Chone Figgins (No. 94): Figgins: .291 BA, .363 OBP, .388 SLG, .751 OPS, 99 OPS+, 31 HR, 341 RBI, 280 SB. Wells did have three Gold Gloves in the decade, but then again Derek Jeter had four. So there's that. We are admittedly unabashed Soriano fans here, but his offensive numbers certainly stack up favorably to those two players ranked in the 80s (and Figgins).
