Keith Law likes the Cubs deal that sent Jake Fox and Aaron Miles to Oakland: Jake Fox didn't have much value to the Chicago Cubs because of his defensive limitations -- that is, the fact that he doesn't play any position particularly well -- and the lack of a DH spot in which to play him much of the time. ... The A's have to take on Aaron Miles, who is lucky to be above replacement level in any year and was among the worst players to spend 2009 on a major-league roster. And what about the guys they got in return? The Cubs get salary relief more than anything else. Jeff Gray is a very good middle reliever with plus velocity (94-97 the last time I saw him) and plus control who generates a lot of groundballs, perhaps mitigating the lack of a great second pitch. Ronny Morla has some arm strength but has yet to pitch in full-season ball after three years in the system; he's a fringe prospect if one at all. Matt Spencer is an athletic outfielder with some power and a long swing, as well as a plus throwing arm in the field. Even if it's just Gray plus money saved, it's a very good deal for the Cubs. The Cubs have to pay Miles $1 million to play somewhere else (or not), which seems like a good deal all by itself.
