The Year In Paul Sullivan
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 29 December 2009

Following yesterday's The Year In Paul Rogers, I present to you the other half of the dynamic Trib duo: One Paul Sullivan, who spent a lot of 2009 being very, very cross with the shenanigans of Milton Bradley and Carlos Zambrano:

February 13: Sullivan writes: "The Cubs hope Bradley doesn't change too much. They think they could use a little edginess." Really. He did.

February 16: Sullivan writes the first story on moving Soriano out of the leadoff spot. That story seems quaint now, doesn't it?

February 19: Sullivan writes 500 words about the possibility of Manny Ramirez coming to the Cubs, all the while saying there's no chance of that happening.

February 19: Sullivan backtracks on the story that Soriano is moving out of the leadoff spot - and blames Lou for misleading him.

February 21: Officially out of things to write about at Spring Training, Sullivan digs into who destroyed Sammy Sosa's boom box five years earlier. He doesn't come up with answers. We're not talking Woodward here, folks.

March 8: Sullivan declares Reed Johnson a fan favorite. He gets one right, but it seems he could have put a more critical eye on this - perhaps by explaining to Cubs fans that Johnson really isn't very good. Instead, he dedicated his powers to psychoanalyzing Bradley some more.

April 5: Sullivan predicts Soriano will be the team MVP, Carlos Zambrano will be the team's Cy Young and Micah Hoffpauir will be the Rookie of the Year (by default). How did those work out?

April 11: Sullivan somehow manages to miss boneheaded baseball played by Ryan Theriot. Crazy, huh?

April 30: In a largely genial story, Sullivan is sympathetic to Moises Alou's slow start as a Cub (due to injury), but neglects to mention the same factor for Bradley. Curious.

June 11: Sullivan believes it is controversial for Zambrano to suggest he will retire at the end of his contract.

June 26: Sullivan insists Bradley is being benched - for one game.

July 1: Sullivan calls the Cubs "strange."

July 8: Sullivan - intensifying his criticism of Zambrano - calls Z a "poor return on investment."

July 8: Sullivan seems to blame Bradley for the Cubs' inability to score runs.

July 23: Sullivan declares he would rather have Josh Beckett than Zambrano because "Beckett outpitched Zambrano in Game 5 of the 2003 playoffs." Really. He wrote that. Not to say Beckett is better or worse, but that's the reason? Really?

August 22: Sullivan wants the new owner to lower beer prices at Wrigley - apparently based on the belief that there isn't enough drunken nonsense in the bleachers.

September 15: Sullivan tells a reader who was confused enough to write into his mailbag that he - Sullivan - is only to be spoken to in the proper venue. In other words, through his mailbag. Not at Wrigley. Not on the street. And, for the love of God whatever you do, you are not to make eye contact. Got it?

September 16: Sullivan criticizes Z for not wanting to talk to the media - apparently in the proper venue, however.

September 26: Wherein Sullivan tries to be clever.

September 30: Ted Lilly calls Sullivan silly.

November 12: Sullivan takes to Twitter to mock Mark Prior.

November 12: Sullivan bans WV23 from following him on Twitter. A nation weeps.

November 20: Sullivan gives some economics lessons - and WV23 suggests alternate versions of paragraphs. Since times are tough at the Trib and all.

December 1: Sullivan lobs an easy one for WV23.

December 7: Sullivan breaks out the word "mercurial" to describe Bradley - just for old times sake.

December 24: Sullivan continues to struggle with digital media. Not only did he do next to nothing on the old Hardball blog, now he is a nonfactor on Twitter.

So that's 2009. What does 2010 hold for Paul Sullivan, now that Milton Bradley is out of town? Who will be the object of his niggles? The leader in the clubhouse, of course, is Zambrano - with Soriano not far behind.
