Theriot A Top 10 Cub Of The Decade? Um, No
Written by wrigleyville

Being the end of the year and the end of the decade, the list makers in the media are on double duty. ESPN Chicago is no exception, rolling out their top 10 Cubs of the decade. Here it is: 10. Mark DeRosa. Though with the team for only a short period of time, he became arguably its most popular player. DeRosa was a key component of the 2007 and '08 division championship teams. He batted .289 with 31 home runs and 159 runs batted in during his two-plus seasons. His versatility and game-altering hits were his forte. And he could still win an election as alderman in Chicago. 9. Mark Prior. The Cubs selected him with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2000 draft. Praised for his mechanics, Prior was a dominant force for a couple of seasons. His best season was 2003, when he went 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA, and he was one of the three main pitching components of the 2003 and '04 Cubs (with Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano). Injuries led to a shortened career. 8. Ryan Theriot. He is the first starting shortstop developed in the Cubs' farm system since Shawon Dunston. An overachiever that fans love to root for, Theriot is a career .288 hitter. His best season was in 2008 when he batted .307 and had a .387 on-base percentage. He has been solid defensively and durable the past three seasons, averaging 12 errors and 150 games played. 7. Moises Alou. Signed as a free agent before the 2002 season, the career .303 hitter helped the Cubs win the division in 2003. His best season on the North Side came in 2004 when he batted .293 with 39 home runs and 106 runs batted in. His reaction to Steve Bartman catching the foul ball over Alou's glove in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS will be replayed forever. 6. Sammy Sosa. Although he finished his career in 2004 with the Cubs, he was still a major impact player in the early part of the decade. His best season of the decade was 2001 when he hit .328 with 64 home runs and 160 runs batted in, part of a five-year stretch in which he averaged 58 home runs a season. He was traded to the Orioles following the 2004 season. 5. Ryan Dempster. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry took a chance on Dempster, a starter coming off Tommy John surgery in 2003. Dempster proved a worthy gamble, coming back as the Cubs' closer, saving 85 games in three seasons before returning to the starting rotation. His best season was 2008, when he went 17-6 with a 2.91 ERA and made the All-Star team. 4. Kerry Wood. Although injured from 2004-'06, Wood was still the face of the franchise in the decade. He won 38 games from 2001-'03 and pitched the franchise to its first successful postseason series in 95 years, when the Cubs beat the Braves in the NLDS in 2003. He converted to become an All-Star closer in 2008 before signing with Cleveland as a free agent. 3. Derrek Lee. One of general manager Jim Hendry's best trades, Lee was acquired from the Florida Marlins after the 2003 season for Hee Seop Choi and Mike Nannini. He put up MVP-type seasons in 2005 (.335 average, 46 homers, 107 RBIs) and 2009 (.306, 35, 111). He's a strong, silent clubhouse leader and is one of the top first basemen in the game with three Gold Gloves. 2. Carlos Zambrano. He helped pitch the Cubs into three postseasons and won more games than any Cubs pitcher in the decade (105). His best season was 2004, when he went 16-8 with a 2.75 ERA. One of the top hitting pitchers in baseball, Zambrano has 20 career home runs. His no-hitter against the Astros on Sept. 14, 2008 was one of the Cubs' highlights of the decade. 1. Aramis Ramirez. The highlight of Hendry's trading resume, Ramirez was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates with Kenny Lofton for Jose Hernandez, Bobby Hill and Matt Bruback for the stretch run in 2003. Ramirez and Lofton made the difference for the Cubs. Ramirez, whose best season was in 2006 when he batted .291 with 38 homers and 119 RBIs, was the Cubs' top RBI man during the decade. All told, it's not a bad list (Sosa feels low, and the omission of Alfonso Soriano is goofy but typical). And looking past the lunacy that is DeRosa's inclusion on the list, one name stands out: Ryan Theriot. Ryan Theriot of the LSU Theriots? Really? Is he even one of the top 10 Cubs on the team - let alone the decade? Let's check: If we were playing a sandlot game, these players would go before Theriot without a doubt: Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee, Geovany Soto, Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly, Carlos Marmol, Kosuke Fukudome. That's nine players on the current Ricketts-depleted roster. So, no, Ryan Theriot is not one of the top 10 Cubs of the decade. Or any other decade.
