Z To The Mets? The Post Thinks It's Possible

The New York Post floats the idea that the Mets could be interested in dealing for Z: Another possibility would be discussing a trade with the Cubs for Carlos Zambrano. But it seems unlikely that Fred and Jeff Wilpon would have the stomach to add another $18 million to the payroll next season unless the Cubs were willing to take a big contract in return. I have no idea why the Cubs would look to deal the likes of Zambrano unless they're reloading and freeing up money. That said, bigcontracts on the Mets include: Johan Santana, owed $92 million through 2013 (plus a $25 million club option in 2014, with a $5.5 million buyout). They aren't moving him. Carlos Beltran, owed $37 million over the next two years. Intriguing. Oliver Perez, owed $24 million over the next two years. No, thank you. Francisco Rodriguez, owed $23 million over the next two years (plus a $17.5 million option in 2012, with a $3.5 million buyout). They're not moving him. David Wright, owed $39 million over the next three years (plus a $16 million club option in 2013, with a $1 million buyout). Cubs do not need. Luis Castillo, owed $12 million over the next two years. Uh oh. That's about the extent of the players they owe tens of millions of dollars over a period of years. Likelihood: 1.3 percent (using the proprietary WV23 likelihood-o-meter). (And, as a reminder, Z openly mused about signing with the Mets once upon a time - earning him the name "Mr. Met" around these parts." And the New York Post has speculated about it in the past.)
