Mr. Hersh's Faulty Olympic Baseball Logic
Written by wrigleyville

050707_baseballOLY2000_hmed.hmedium.jpgPhilip Hersh writes that baseball's bid to be an Olympic sport is dead because of the steroid taint around Alex Rodriguez.

Good point. We never see Olympians doping.

To which Hersh responds:

The IOC's efforts to curb doping are very imperfect, especially in a world where chemists can devise undetectable performance-enhancing drugs with apparently minimal effort. But at least Olympic sports try to do the best they can.

Major League Baseball's anti-doping efforts still are halfhearted, as evidenced by the sport's failure to institute blood testing.

Fine, though the Olympics don't have to deal with recalcitrant unions. The process is somewhat different: The Olympics issue edicts; baseball must negotiate it into a labor agreement. But never mind that because Phil Hersh is way up high on his soap box.

Then he follows with this:

The Olympics don't need baseball because less than a dozen countries care about the game.

So, Phil, what is the magic number for nations that care about the game? And, whatever that number is, does that mean the Olympics now have to get rid of some sports?

Baseball as an Olympic sport may very well be dead, but don't use the purity of the Olympics and the lack of global popularity of the game as your proof points.
